 Must reads!
What a great thread! Where on earth does one begin? I predict that in due time this will be the longest thread on the forum.
I will be moderate and begin with four. Well, here goes:
1. The Holy Bible
Here is quote from a book (sneaking in another recommendation) entitled, "Counsels of Perfection for Christian Mothers," by The Very Reverend P. Lejeune, Honorary Canon of the Cathedral of Reims, Archpriest of Charleville, 1913.
"The Gospel is entitled to a special place in preference to all other books. It ought to be in every family. You should never permit a day to pass without reading at least a page of it. It is humiliating to think that Protestants must be proposed as models for you in this matter. The four Gospels are within reach of even the poorest. They are the best reading for you and your family."
2. Prayer the Key to Salvation, by Father Michael Mueller, C.SS.R., 1867
Upon reading this book some time ago, it effected a change in how and what I pray.

3. The Story of a Family (The Home of the Little Flower), by the Rev. Fr. Stephane-Joseph Piat, O.F.M., 1947
An absolute must for anybody trying to find what a exemplary Catholic family looks like. Beautifully written and speaks to the heart.
4. Pius X, The Life Story of the Beatus, by Fr. Hieronymo Dal-Gal, 1953.
I loved this book, it was Unputdownable!
Looking forward to hearing from others.

1. The Love of Eternal Wisdom - Saint Louis de Montfort
2. The Soul of the Apostolate - Dom Chautard; bedside book of Saint Pius X
3. The Love of Mary - D. Roberto
4. The Interior Life: Simplified to its Fundamentals - Very Rev. Joseph Tissot
5. The Robber Church - Patrick Henry Omlor
Titles 2 and 3 may be purchsed here: http://www.tanbooks.com
Title 4 may be purchased here: http://www.booksforcatholics.com (edit - it seems that it is no longer listed at the site).
Title 5 is downloadable for free here: http://www.novusordowatch.org and may be purchased here: http://www.asisna.com/cri/
Title 1 is easily located, and is still in print through the Monfort Fathers (I think that is the group).

Given our present circumstances, and Our Lady's repeated requests to pray the Rosary, it would serve anyone well to read (or re-read) The Secret of the Rosary, by Saint Louis de Montfort.

Has anybody read The History of the Catholic Church by Laux? If so was it a good read? I've requested my wife purchase it for my birthday.

Pax Christi !
With all the confusion lately being generated by the Novus Ordo professional lay-apologists regarding
regarding " Religious Liberty " I highly recommend ;
"Religious Liberty Questioned", Achbishops Lefebvre's objections to Vatican II's Declaration on Religious Liberty, Angelus Press.
ISBN# 0-892331-12-8.

Has anybody else read "The Immaculate Conception" by Bishop William Ullathorne (1855 I believe)? In my opinion the best contemporary work on the doctrine.

The two books I presently find very edifying are:
Divine Intimacy, Fr. Gabriel (TAN)
Iota Unum, Romano Amerio
A most excellent and accessible summary of the spiritual life may be found in:
Guidance in Spiritual Direction, Rev. Charles Hugo Doyle (see Roman Catholic Books)
This volume details the purgative, illuminative, and unitive "ways" in the spiritual life, providing many clues and stepping stones.

I am somewhat surprised that no one has recommended, The Rhine Flows Into the Tiber by Father Ralph Wiltgen. SVD. This book, in my estimation, is a candid, objective and contemporary account of Vatican II by someone who was there, and is perfect for introducing distraught Novus Ordinarians to the resistance. This is not to say that I necessarily agree with all of the author's opinions or conclusions with regard to those events (and who, I believe, was neither liberal nor conservative - as if those terms mean anything anymore.)
This is my first time posting. I'm relieved to be relatively confident on the topic! From my review of previous posts on this and other topics, I admit to feeling somewhat intimidated by the knowledge and ease of expression of many members. Just 'dipping my toe' in the water!

I loved this book, it was Unputdownable! I just put Forbes's biography of him up on Archive.org; that one is good, but somewhat short and doesn't cover Modernism as much as I would have hoped. Have you read Yves Chiron's St. Pius X biography (Angelus Press)? If so, how does it compare to Fr. Hieronymo Dal-Gal's? Does it emphasize his handling of Modernism like Yves Chiron's apparently does? Thanks Also, I would recommend all the online works of Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange.

 Free must reads!
Here are my recommendations (both completely online for free): Humility of Heart by Fr. Cajetan Mary da Bergamo (there's a cause for his beatification) is at least as good and spiritually challenging as The Imitation of Christ. The Suicide of Altering the Faith in the Liturgy by Fr. Paul L. Kramer, B.Ph., S.T.B. (@ Angelicum '72-'78), M. Div., S.T.L. (Cand.)
